Things to know about Grand Rapids Michigan and its surrounding areas
Research before you move. It’s important to understand the culture you’re joining. Do research online and find out about school systems,(https://k12.niche.com/rankings/public-school-distr...) neighborhoods, parking (Map of Downtown parking-http://grcity.us/enterprise-services/Parking-Servi...) , weather, public transportation (BUS-https://www.ridetherapid.org/) , and laws that are native to that area. If you can, visit Grand Rapids before moving and connect with someone who’s lived there before.
Have a plan. There are a lot of steps to go through before you start packing the moving truck. Look into Real Estate agents who have the experience to get you what you want. Find an agent who has sold homes through out West Michigan so they can help you make an informed choice to where to buy your next home.
Get involved. We are a fun group of People! We like to believe we are a big city but are still small! Don’t expect the neighbors to knock your door down with a casserole when you arrive. Take the initiative. If there are things you liked to do in your last town, find ways to do those things in West Michigan. Try new things. Volunteer. West Michigan offers so many opportunities to engage other people, so find what you like.
Mind your wallet. Living Downtown is vibrant but it is expensive. Everything costs more: food, insurance, clothes, HOA's. Consider looking at different areas and suburbs around Grand Rapids to possibly get more bang for your buck. Several areas like Hudsonville, Wyoming and Cascade are only 15 minutes from downtown via Automobile.
